Invisalign is a convenient, discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional metal braces. Offered to children, teens and adults, Invisalign’s popularity has been on the incline for several years. While there are many benefits to choosing these clear aligners for your treatment journey, there are a few important rules you need to follow to avoid staining around the attachments. To keep your smile bright and white while wearing your Invisalign trays, our team at Walt Orthodontics has put together our top tips!
Be Aware Of Dark Beverages
Invisalign attachments normally come in the shape of a square, triangle or circle. To avoid staining on your teeth in these shapes, you should try to refrain from drinking dark coloured beverages. This includes drinks such as coffee, dark tea, pop and red wine. If you do decide to consume one of these beverages, we recommend using a straw. Remember to always take your Invisalign aligners out whenever you’re drinking anything other than water!
Thoroughly Brush Your Teeth And Clean Your Aligners
For optimal oral care while undergoing Invisalign treatment, you should aim to brush your teeth after every meal before reinserting your trays in your mouth. At minimum, we recommend completing your oral hygiene routine at least twice a day. Failure to do this could result in plaque build-up and staining. On top of this, it’s important to brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, clear liquid soap to remove any debris or food particles that have accumulated during the day. Don’t forget to rinse thoroughly after cleaning!
Be Careful of Certain Mouthwashes
Some mouthwashes can cause staining around the Invisalign attachments. We have found that a lot of the blue ones tend to do this, so for this reason we recommend Listerine Total Care Zero (Purple). If you rinse your mouth more than once a day with mouthwash you may be increasing the chance for staining to occur.
Smoking Is A No Go
Smoking is always bad for your teeth, oral health and overall health. However when you’re undergoing Invisalign treatment, smoking puts you at a high risk for attachment staining. The nicotine and tar in cigarettes can linger in your mouth for a long period of time and even if you clean your mouth and alingers, you can still experience discolouration and staining. We highly recommend giving up smoking for the duration of your treatment.
