f you just began your orthodontic journey and you’re concerned about what you’re allowed to eat and drink this season, you’re not alone! At Walt Orthodontics our team of orthodontic professionals are here to answer all of your questions, and give you a few summer snack ideas too!
Soft, Healthy Foods Are Great Options
According to the Canadian Association of Orthodontics, soft snacks are the best options! They won’t cause damage to the brackets of your braces, and you’ll avoid the risk of complications to your treatment process. In addition to choosing soft foods, cold ones are a great idea during the summer too! They’ll allow you to beat the heat and reduce any inflammation or discomfort from adjustments. We recommend choosing these treats:
- Popsicles
- Frozen Yogurt
- Berry Smoothies
- Bananas
- Cheese
- Yogurt
Avoid Hard, Crunchy Foods
It’s best to avoid harder, crunchy foods if you’re undergoing treatment this season. The particles from hard snacks can easily get stuck in between your teeth or braces. They can also cause damage to your braces, and as a result can slow down your treatment too.
- Celery
- Whole Apples
- Popcorn
- Chips
- Nuts
Avoid Chewy, Sticky Foods
According to Oral-B, sticky and chewy foods are typically higher in sugar. This can lead to the development of cavities, damage or loosen braces and wiring, and promote gum disease too.
- Caramels
- Hard Candies
- Fudges
- Toffee
